When To Recharge or Refill Fire Extinguisher?
Personnel need to trust that a fire extinguisher will function properly in an emergency. Once fire extinguishers are installed there should be an ongoing maintenance and inspection process in place to keep the devices fully functional and ready in the event of an emergency.
Some of the criteria to determine the need to refill fire extinguisher:
- The maintenance tag indicates that the fire extinguisher is due to be refilled based upon the manufacturer specifications and the last refill date.
- The pressure on the fire extinguisher has dropped below a satisfactory operating level.
- There is damage to the fire extinguisher that could have affected the pressure or operating capability.
- Corrosion is found around the fire extinguisher which could cause leakage.
- Harsh environmental conditions may exist that could affect the pressure of the fire extinguisher. These conditions include excess dust or dirt, increased moisture or humidity, large vibrations from heavy equipment, or extreme temperatures.
- Even if a fire extinguisher was only briefly or accidentally discharged and a small amount was released, there is cause to refill fire extinguisher. Because of the pressurized operations and propellant gas used in extinguishers even a small discharge can cause the device to degas and lose the ability to function properly.
